Raising Cane’s Grand Opening

The much anticipated ribbon cutting and grand opening of Raising Cane’s, 14385 W. Bell Road, was held on Friday, December 8. Several Councilmembers joined me to welcome the highly requested restaurant to Surprise. In attendance for the grand opening was the Willow Canyon band and hundreds of anxious residents. Welcome to Surprise, Raising Cane’s!

Surprise Fire-Medical Annual Awards

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department held its 12th Annual Awards Ceremony on December 8, 2017 in the City Council Chambers. The Awards Ceremony recognized members and their achievements within the Department for the past year. The award recipients are chosen through a nomination and voting process by the Department members, except for the Fire Chief’s Award. The Fire Chief reserves the right to select a member for the annual Fire Chief’s award. Typically, the award is given to one recipient. This year, Fire Chief Tom Abbott chose two recipients, Emergency Medical Services Battalion Chief Jesus Rivera and Personnel and Community Affairs Battalion Chief Julie Moore.

Engineer Ryan Ellis received the Firefighter of the Year award. Members of the Department choose Ellis for multiple reasons, including his exemplary performance and professionalism on medical and fire calls; his management of the SFMD Communications Program; and his commitment to overseeing the SFMD Wildland Team. Ellis is known for his exceptional patient care, including the care of pediatric patients, and excellent customer service. He has served the Department for over 17 years.

The Perry award was created after a young Surprise Firefighter passed away from cancer in 2002. The award is presented to a fire suppression member that best epitomizes the SFMD values, which include respectfulness, positive behavior, responsibility, honesty, and pride. Firefighter Mike Meadors was recognized as the recipient of this year’s Perry Award.

Engine Company 301 and Ladder Company 305 were awarded the Company of the Year award for working a First Alarm fire in a large two- story apartment building. This award is normally given to one company, but the crew members from Engine 301 and Ladder 305 were recognized due to their coordinated incident plan of an interior fire attack and roof ventilation. The crews were able to stay ahead of the attic fire, stop the fire from extending into the unit’s living areas, and extinguish the fire.

Firefighter Louis D’Angelo was awarded Paramedic of the Year for his participation as the Co-Chair for the Emergency Medical Services Committee.

The ceremony also acknowledged promotions, Firefighters, Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) hired within the past eighteen (18) months. SFMD has hired eighteen (18) Firefighters, an Administrative Technician, five (5) Paramedics, four (4) EMTs, and promoted one (1) Captain and seven (7) Engineers. A special badge pinning event took place for the Paramedics and EMTs hired for the SFMD ambulance service. Congratulations to all!
